⚫Why Do My Microbes Smell?Updated an hour ago

Occasional mild earthy smells are normal. Strong or persistent odors usually indicate one of the following conditions: 


Cause 1 — Insufficient Moisture

If food input is infrequent or in small amounts, the internal heating element can dry out the microbes faster than they can be replenished. When microbes become too dry, they enter a dormant (spore) state and can no longer effectively decompose food. Adding food to dormant microbes causes it to sit unprocessed, generating odors.


Cause 2 — C:N Ratio Imbalance (Too Much Nitrogen)

The ideal Carbon to Nitrogen (C:N) ratio for healthy microbes is 30:1. Most everyday food scraps (fruits, vegetables, meat) are nitrogen-heavy. Over time, consistently nitrogen-heavy inputs will throw off this balance and produce odors.


Solution: Add carbon-rich materials regularly to restore balance:

  • Bread or crackers

  • Unbleached kitchen paper towel — cut into finger-sized pieces, then pour a small cup of water over them before adding

Sour / acidic smell

• First, reduce the microbe volume down to the MIN line if it is above that level — scoop out the excess and discard. 


• Add bread and/or unbleached paper towel (finger-sized, with a cup of water poured over).


• Add a small amount of used coffee grounds — the bitter aroma helps neutralize sourness. Do not add large quantities; coffee grounds do not decompose.


• Avoid highly acidic foods (e.g., lemon) until resolved.


• Maintain proper moisture — not too wet, not too dry. Refer to the Squeeze Test(See⬇).

Strong ammonia / foul smell

• First, reduce the microbe volume down to the MIN line if it is above that level — scoop out the excess and discard. 


• Add bread and/or unbleached paper towel (finger-sized, with a cup of water poured over).


• Add a small amount of used coffee grounds.


• Add citrus peels (lime, lemon, grapefruit) in moderate amounts — chop or blend first as they are thick and decompose slowly.


• These are high nitrogen-load indicators — increase carbon inputs consistently.


💡  The Purify button can help reduce odors temporarily by increasing fan speed and air circulation — but it does not fix the root cause. Address the underlying issue (moisture, C:N balance, or cleanliness) for lasting results.



How to check moisture levels: the Squeeze Test
Take a small handful of the microbe media and squeeze it firmly in your fist. The ideal result: no water drips out, but the material just barely holds its shape. If it crumbles and falls apart completely, it's too dry. If water drips out, it's too wet.
