Yes. If food waste containing salt is added to Reencle, salt can remain in the resulting compost. However, during the microbial decomposition process, some salt ions can become less soluble or be incorporated into the microbial system, reducing the concentration of freely dissolved salts.
What Happens to Salt During the Reencle Process?
Reencle uses a living microbial system to continuously break down organic matter. During this process, salt can interact with both the decomposing organic material and the microorganisms in the system.
1. Salt Ions Can Bind to Organic Matter
As microorganisms break down food waste, organic substances are formed that can bind or adsorb dissolved ions such as sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺).
When these ions become associated with organic particles, they are no longer present in the same freely dissolved form. As a result, the concentration of soluble salts may decrease even though the total amount of salt in the material has not simply disappeared.
2. Microorganisms Can Take Up Ions
The salt-tolerant microorganisms used in Reencle can also take up certain inorganic ions as part of maintaining their internal osmotic balance.
This can further reduce the concentration of freely dissolved salt ions in the surrounding material.
What Does This Mean for Your Compost?
The important distinction is that Reencle does not simply remove or eliminate all salt from food waste. Instead, microbial decomposition can change how some salt ions are distributed within the compost, including shifting them from a freely dissolved form to forms associated with organic matter or microorganisms.
For plant use, we still recommend properly curing Reencle compost and mixing it with soil rather than using concentrated compost as a standalone growing medium.
A general recommended ratio is:
1 part Reencle compost to 4 parts soil
For mulching, cured Reencle compost can be applied in a small amount over the soil surface. Keep the compost away from direct contact with plant stems and roots.
